Physical Education
At Shanklea Primary School, we are dedicated to inspiring and challenging children to believe in themselves, compete with enthusiasm, and ultimately succeed in Physical Education. Our vision is to create a vibrant and engaging environment where every pupil is encouraged to discover their potential and develop a lifelong love for physical activity. Through unique and varied learning contexts, pupils enhance their competence in a multitude of sporting disciplines, which supports their overall health and fitness. This holistic approach not only benefits their physical well-being but also fosters personal growth, as pupils become physically confident and develop effective leadership skills.
The National Curriculum underscores the importance of a high-quality physical education curriculum, designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in both competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. Our programme seeks to provide a rich variety of opportunities that foster physical confidence, which is crucial for maintaining good health and fitness levels. Engaging in competition not only helps to build character but also instils essential values such as fairness, respect, teamwork, and perseverance. We believe that these values are integral to the development of well-rounded individuals.
Our commitment to Physical Education is reflected in our allocation of two hours each week, during which students experience a diverse range of activities that challenge their physical abilities and encourage teamwork. This includes a robust swimming programme for Year 4 pupils, who begin their aquatic journey at in local Concordia Leisure Centre, where they learn vital swimming skills. These lessons instil confidence in the water and provide a foundation that is further built upon in Years 5 and 6 through advanced swimming sessions, allowing students to refine their strokes and improve their techniques.
Additionally, to promote outdoor learning and enhance skills in a natural environment, we organise Forest School sessions led by the LASP for students in Years 1 through 6. These sessions focus on forest skills, teamwork, and resilience, fostering a profound connection with nature. Pupils learn essential survival skills, develop problem-solving capabilities, and build camaraderie with their peers. This multi-layered approach to physical education is instrumental in shaping not only capable athletes but also responsible citizens.
The National Curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all children:
·      Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
·      Are physically active and engaged
·      Participate in competitive sports and activities
·      Lead healthy and active lives
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and understanding as specified in the relevant programme of study. At Shanklea Primary School, we aim to ensure that our pupils not only achieve success but also understand the principles behind physical education as a lifelong pursuit.
Through our physical education teaching, children cultivate a deep passion for the subject. Our objective is to equip every child with a comprehensive skill set that encompasses not only skill acquisition but also creativity, skill application, and movement appreciation. Furthermore, we place significant emphasis on developing critical life skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, self-control, and leadership abilities. We also strive to instil an awareness of safety, competition, and the rules of various sports, including officiating where appropriate. Ultimately, we endeavour to lay the foundation for a generation of individuals who not only value their own health and fitness but also appreciate the importance of honesty, respect, and tolerance in all aspects of life. This multifaceted approach prepares our pupils to face future challenges with confidence and integrity.
